The facts

The Spine

The spine consists of: bone (vertebrae), muscles, tendons, joints, spinal cord and nerves.

5 regions

The spine is divided into 5 regions: neck, ribcage, lower back, sacrum and tailbone.

Stacked

. The bones in the spine are stacked onto one another. In between them are shock absorbers which we call discs.

Protection

The spine protects the spinal cord, which is an extension of the brainstem and runs within the spinal canal until the upperpart of the lower back.

Information from the brain

. The spinal cord receives information from the brain. The information from the brain will go via the spinal cord to the nerves in order to move our arms and legs and makes our skin feel pain, cold, warm and touch sensations.

Water

The spinal cord and nerves are surrounded by water (spinal fluid) and protected by three membranes, we call meninges (Dural sack).
