Disease of the nerve ends in arms and legs 

Polyneuropathy can affect sensory and motor nerves in the arms and legs.

Polyneuropathy

Mostly starts in toes and fingertips and can progress to arms and legs.

It can develop slowly over months and years,but can also start acute depending on cause. 

Symptoms

Tingeling

Cushion or sandpaper

The sensation of walking on cushions or sandpaper can occur

Numbness

Loss of strength

Problems with walking or balance, especially while walking in the dark. Part of limb can seem thinner.

Pain

Some polyneuropathies can be very painful.

Cause

  • Unknown

  • Diabetes

  • Kidney problems

  • Thyroid problems

  • Vitamine deficiency

  • Alcohol abuse

  • Chemotherapy

  • Heriditary 

  • Infection i.e. AIDS, Borrelia

  • Auto-immune disease

Treatment

  • Treatment is dependent on cause. 
  • Mostly it’s symptom treatment.
  • Take preventive measures to stop worsening of complaints: i.e. manage diabetes better and/or reduce alcohol intake.

Prognosis

Depends on type of polyneuropathy and cause.
